How do I apply for a scholarship?

When can I apply for a scholarship?

Scholarship Season is open from September to January annually. Successful applicants are announced in Feb/Mar.

What are the requirements for earning a scholarship?

All applications will be assessed individually by the DCF trustees. As a general rule, preference will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria:

  • Reasonable use for scholarship funds, for example, course fees, educational resources, travel expenses associated with study or study tours.
  • Focus of studies on ornamental horticulture, especially with an emphasis on the bedding, container, pot plant and cut flower sectors.
  • Seeking to make a career in the field of commercial or production ornamental horticulture.
  • Show demonstrable talent, as evidenced by grades achieved and by tutors’ assessments.

Financial need will also be taken into account.

How much does a scholarship pay?

  • Student Scholarships – Up to £1000 per award, five scholarships are given annually.
  • Markham – Colegrave International Scholarship – $4,500 USD, one scholarship is give annually.
  • South West Growers South – £1,500, one scholarship is given annually.
  • Floranova Ornamental Horticulture Research Scholarship – £1,500, one scholarship is given annually.
  • Ball Colegrave Scholarship – Up to £1,500, one scholarship is given annually.
  • British Protected Ornamentals Association – Peter Seabrook Bursary – £1,000 is shared between one or more students

What are the conditions of any scholarship?

By applying for a DCF scholarship you affirm that you give permission for your basic personal details, the details of your course, placements and horticultural ambitions to be published on the DCF and in any promotional material.

On our notification to you of any scholarship award we will require a written acceptance from you of the award and a brief detail expanding the goals set out in your initial application as to how you propose to spend the bursary.

In addition to assist with media communications we will requires a good quality photo of yourself and a written response to your success by way of a quote.

On completion of your current course year for which the scholarship has been awarded you agree to provide us with a written and photographic report highlighting your work and demonstrating use of your funding.

Prior to and following this, we do not insist on regular communication, but are always pleased to receive updates and feedback from you on your progress, successes and tribulations. Your updates are always valuable and can assist us in building profile. Furthermore, if we can help with further guidance and support we would be pleased to seek to help you.

How do I apply for a trip bursary?

Support is given for educational group trips that promote the learning of commercial horticulture production.

A group of students or a college tutor may apply to be considered for a group trip. You may do this at any point in the year, but it is advisable to get your request in as early as possible.

How do I offer a Sponsored Scholarship?

Sponsored Scholarships are funded by private horticultural companies who have a desire to support students with a specific interest in a given area of horticulture.

The Foundation is also willing to act as an umbrella organisation for individuals who would like to set up a memorial-sponsored scholarship for someone who has made a significant contribution to our industry. Does DCF accept donations?

Although DCF does not run organised fundraising activities, the Trustees would be delighted to receive any donations in helping the Foundation achieve its goal of providing support for the next generation of horticulturists. This may be through a one off donation or a fundraising initiative.
