Gavin Trinder from Monmouthshire who won a Student Scholarship of £1,000 while studying studying for his Level 2 in Horticulture at NPTC, alongside his work as a nursery manager, shares his news since receiving the scholarship… “Since receiving the David Colegrave Scholarship I feel I have made a really good step into the right direction in which I want to go. It has helped me to financially fund my travels to and from college on a weekly basis as well as helping me visit places of interest within horticulture. Also from the point of view of my job I feel much more confident in running the nursery at Abergavenny Garden Centre as I have been able to access knowledge of others and techniques for growing bedding etc. I am now excited for next season as we are planning to offer a larger range of bedding / basket plants and I really can not wait to get stuck in. I am going back to the NPTC to study level 3. This scholarship has helped me fund my fuel, I had to drive there and back once a week (40 Miles each way) last year and it really eased the pressure and helped me to enjoy my studies a lot more. I’m hoping that once I finish the level 3 I will feel fully equipped to go on with my role, but am still interested in helping my customers with the after care of their plants. I feel I’m now in a position to do that.
It has also given me a huge amount in confidence following the scholarship as my interests and hard work have been acknowledged. It is great to be recognised for something you love and enjoy and made my family, friends and work colleagues very proud. I now feel more passionate about not only growing products but in other areas of horticulture. These include talking to suppliers and customers regularly and being able to plan what we need to grow in advance, also I still feel I have a long way to go but this is the start of what I hope is a long career in Horticulture and would like the Thank the David Colegrave for the chance and I feel you have helped tremendously!”
