Steven, who won a Student Scholarship of £1,000, while studying for a Master of Horticulture with the Royal Horticultural Society while also working as a grower at Lovania, shares his news since receiving the scholarship…

“Since receiving the student scholarship through the David Colegrave Foundation I have been busy working on assignments and revising for my latest exam.

The most recent module I have been studying is retail horticulture. This has given me the skills essential for becoming an effective leader within the industry as well as giving me a broader knowledge base of horticulture in general.

Some of the subjects I have covered in this module include operations management, effective marketing strategies and how to improve myself and my team.  I am pleased to say I scored very well in both assignments gaining a merit and a distinction!

I have also recently been promoted to grower manager at Lovania.  I truly believe my studying has had a part to play in my promotion as it has given me better knowledge and understanding of my day to day work.  It’s also given me the skills needed to be an effective manager and team leader.

I now have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge to other growers as well as putting my recently gained skills into practice.  I really enjoy my new job role and working as part of an effective team at Lovania.

I am very lucky to be working for a company like Lovania that gives me the opportunity to develop as a professional horticulturist.  This along with the generosity of the David Colegrave Foundation has enabled me to better myself and secure a positive future in the job I love.  So for this I am truly grateful!

I am looking forward to continuing to study with the Royal Horticultural Society and I am excited about what the future holds in my new job role.
